At first glance, football and faith might seem like an unlikely pairing. But in the Parish of Olton Friary, it's been discovered how wonderfully they can be combined. As part of the Jubilee Year celebrations, two special football tournaments were organized: one for youth (June 7) and another interchurch tournament for adults (July 6).
Both events took place right in the Parish, and were a great success!
Youth Soccer Tournament – June 7
The day began with Holy Mass, with about ten youth teams from various parishes in the Diocese of Birmingham. The young people who participated actively participated in the liturgy, contributing with a joyful tone. After Mass, games began throughout the day. The day was filled with energy, laughter, and a true sportsmanship. It was inspiring to see the young people so enthusiastically engaged, not only in soccer, but also in their journey of faith and fellowship.
Interchurch Tournament for Adults – July 6
The adults had their moment a month later, with four teams from neighboring parishes. This event demonstrated the important role sports play in building unity. It was a day filled with friendly competition, community spirit, and meaningful conversations. The tournament became a platform for people from different parishes to get to know each other, share their experiences, and strengthen their bonds of faith.
These events reminded us how valuable activities like this can be, not only for fun and fitness, but also for growing in faith, unity, and inclusion. The community is grateful to all who participated and supported these events.
