The Betharramite mission in South America was one of Saint Michael's most courageous and important decisions. The story is well known. Many Basques had emigrated to the New World in search of work and fortune; but many lived "like pagans" (as Father Guimon said), with no concern for their religious formation. The Bishop of Buenos Aires had written to the Bishop of Bayonne asking him to send Basque priests to those lands. In turn, Bishop Lacroix turned to Betharram. During the Institute's general assembly meeting on October 16, 1854, the Founder placed the fundamental question on the agenda: "Will the Society accept the mission offered to it to exercise the functions of the sacred ministry – functions that fall within the purposes for which it was founded – in the Diocese of Buenos Aires?" The response was unanimous, the American adventure began.

The Betharramite presence in Brazil developed in the mid-1930s, at the explicit request of nuns from Passa Quatro and with the approval of Brazilian ecclesiastical authorities. The first community, Ginasio São Miguel, opened in Passa Quatro in March 1937 and was composed of Fathers Jean-Baptiste Apetche and Edouard Miéyaa, Frenchmen, Dante Angelelli, Italian, and Francis Darley, Englishman. Toward the end of the same year, Father Evald Huwel, an Argentinean of German origins, arrived, another cornerstone of Betharramite work in Brazil.

The Betharramite presence in Paraguay was certainly favored by the expulsion of the religious from France (1903), which provided the new institution with the necessary personnel; but it was above all the fruit of the tireless will of the bishop of Asunción, Monsignor Sinforiano Bogarín, who was determined to establish a Catholic college, the first in his country. The choice fell on the Bajonenses Fathers of Buenos Aires. After a thousand vicissitudes, the Colégio San José opened on July 1, 1904, with 15 students. The first community was composed of Fathers Jean-Baptiste Tounédou, Charles Sampay, Jean Lhoste, Alfred Bacqué, and André Lousteau.
