After seven or eight years in Anglet, France, where the Betharram Fathers were chaplains, nine Indian women, who later became "Servants of Mary," returned to their country. In 1982, they asked Fr. Gaston Hialé, SCJ, to travel to India to lead a retreat scheduled for February 1983. Fr. Gaston went there while he was traveling in Thailand to visit the Missionary Fathers.
During the spiritual exercises, they are joined by the Superior General: they talk about the future and the nuns put forward the idea of a new foundation in India for the Betharram Fathers with the commitment to help them make it happen.
The Sisters' proposal was then submitted to the members of the 1987 General Chapter, at the request of Fr. Grech, then Superior General.

The Betharramite presence in Thailand dates back to the expulsion of missionaries from China in the early 1950s. The Congregation had accepted the mission in China, in the Yunnan region, in 1922, and over thirty religious were sent to carry out their mission in Tali (now Dali), where in December 1948 the Holy See erected the diocese, entrusting it to Monsignor Lucien Lacoste, the first Betharramite bishop.
