France is the cradle of the Congregation of Betharram. According to Saint Michael's first biographer, Father Basilides Bourdenne, the saint of Betharram began to gather his first disciples around him after the diocese's major seminary was transferred to Bayonne (1833), leaving him alone, "above four walls of a vast building." In the shadow of the Marian shrine, the first cell of the future congregation arose, and it was here that Father Garicoïts formed the first group of volunteers, "ready to rush wherever obedience calls"...

The Betharramite presence in Italy arose in the context of the expulsion of the religious from France in 1903 and is the fruit of the work of Divine Providence, as Father Marque, one of the founders of the community in Valtellina, would later say. The Congregation moved in two directions: even before the expulsion, the need for a residence in Rome had been raised, which would function as a General power of attorney for business with the Holy See; at the same time, following the expulsion, the foundation of a community was proposed in the diocese of Como, in the far north of the Italian peninsula. This is how the two main communities of the Betharramite work in Italy were founded: the residence of the Church of the Holy Guardian Angels, in the center of the Eternal City; and the missionary community of Traona, in Valtellina, which was also designated to welcome for their very initial formation young Italians destined for religious life in the Congregation of Betharram…

Following the letter Fidei Donum By the decree of Pius XII in 1957, Betharram decided to come to the aid of the young Churches of Black Africa. After a period of exploration, Father Jean Matéo, provincial superior of France, responded to the appeal of Bishop Emile Durrheimer, sma, bishop of the diocese of Katiola, to open, in Ferkessedougou, the first Catholic secondary school in the north of the country to train Catholic teachers for the diocese. In September 1959, Fathers Pierre Prévost, Jean Suberbielle, and Pierre Monnot left for the mission. In 1963, during his first visit, the Superior General, Father Joseph Mirande, was edified by this new foundation: "No difficulty can stop our Fathers, […] they sacrifice themselves, but for the mission, for the Bishop, therefore as auxiliaries, as instruments, in the words dear to Saint Michael."
